Onboarding and the Me Portal

Designing and testing Nike's preboarding on SuccessFactors

Role: Product & Content Design, Global HR Timeline: 2016 - 2017 Company: Nike
Onboarding and the Me Portal

The Problem

A new hire's first impression of Nike starts before day one, in preboarding. That flow ran on SAP SuccessFactors, a platform built for HR administrators rather than for someone excited and a little nervous about their first day. It did not look or read like Nike, and small friction points, like a confusing password step, were quietly costing people their first good experience of the company.

The Work

I designed the preboarding and onboarding experience on SuccessFactors and gave it a Nike voice: a brand content stylesheet so every heading, paragraph, link, and list matched Nike's standards, the affiliate onboarding logos for Nike, Jordan, Converse, and Hurley, and the identity for "Me," the employee self-service portal.

Then I tested it. I ran a task-based usability audit on a dummy account, watched where people got stuck, and wrote up the findings with severity ratings so the team knew what to fix first, from a password screen that hid its own requirements to instructions that showed up in the wrong place.

Impact

Onboarding stopped reading like enterprise software and started reading like Nike. The content stylesheet meant anyone adding content kept it on-brand without a designer in the loop, and the severity-rated usability findings gave the team a ranked, evidence-backed list of exactly what to fix in the new-hire experience.
