Chris Langstaff, founder of Calafai

Chris Langstaff

A strategist and builder with an MBA. For a decade at Nike I led data, analytics, AI, and product across Portland and Europe, and before that I built analytical software for the U.S. defense and intelligence community. Calafai is where those trades meet.

My work sits where business strategy, technology, and design meet, in that order. I frame the problem, build the analysis, write the code, and make the business case. Design is how the work gets made clear and usable; strategy is what it is for. Most organizations need three people for that.

I run two modes, and most people only meet one of them. The first is associative: it gets pulled toward whatever is unfamiliar, and it connects things other people keep in separate rooms. The second is literal: it wants the deadline, the shipped thing, the correct answer. Bowerman came from the first mode noticing a broken process. Nike running on it for eight years came from the second mode building something that actually worked. I have not stopped adding new fields to what I know, and I do not sit on what I learn before I put it to work.

The standard underneath it is one I did not invent: Steve Prefontaine's line that to give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift. I hold myself to it, and I am inspired to work with people who bring that same creative focus and pride to their craft.

Career Timeline

Whatever the title said, I was Nike's internal strategy consultant: the person who could take a fuzzy, cross-functional problem, build the ROIC case for it, and speak the language of engineering, business, product, and design in the same meeting. Engineer, manager, lead, principal were HR's job codes for wherever Nike needed me most, not a ladder I was climbing.

2011
Discovery Communications
Creative direction across seven television networks
2013
Thetus Corporation
Lead, Software Engineering: all-source intelligence analysis software for the U.S. defense and intelligence community, doing large-scale data fusion years before most industries called it "big data."
2016
Nike, World Headquarters
Engineer to Manager on the SNKRS launch: one of four who wrote Nike's first Core Style Sheet, then designed and first built Bowerman, the prototyping platform Nike ran on for eight years, scaling it with Jacob Ross.

2019
Nike, Global HR Service Innovation
Built unified search across Nike's internal tools for 86,000 employees: 72 systems integrated by the end of 2021, out of an audited 2,600+ internal sites and apps.

2020
MBA, UNC Kenan-Flagler
Beta Gamma Sigma (top 10%), completed while full-time at Nike
2022
Nike EMEA, Service & Experience Design
Lead to Principal: built the discipline from zero, directed 13 AI and analytics product squads. Two DSM fixes alone drove $22M in EBITDA; the full recommendation set modeled near $150M a year for EMEA.

Founded Calafai: senior strategy work on demand, built from every trade above.

I also take a small number of fractional executive engagements: Product, Strategy, AI, Analytics, Design, or Experience leadership, run in founder mode with Calafai's own harness behind me. One senior operator plus 45+ custom-built agents built for exactly this kind of work moves two to four times faster than a typical fractional executive, even one running their own AI tools, because Calafai is built for this specific job. You get well-informed decisions at the speed of the question, not eight to twelve weeks later when the window has already closed.
